For the occasion of Croatia Insurance Company’s 133rd anniversary, the Zagreb Grič Tunnel has been transformed into a multimedia time machine, transporting visitors through 133 years of an interlaced and stormy history of Croatia, the City of Zagreb, as well as the individual histories of every citizen and visitor
In collaboration with two other agencies, Bruketa&Žinić&Grey and Millennium promocija, we created an exhibition that covered a total area of 2.100 sq. m., spanning the full 350 meters of the main tunnel hall, including an additional 200 meters of its passageways. The foundation for the entire spatial design was the concept of time travel and engaging with individual historical stories.
A net-like steel structure was installed in the Zagreb Grič Tunnel to act as a 'tunnel within the tunnel,' with its surface partially empty, intended to convey the content of these individual stories through time. The remaining surface was filled with reproductions of historical artifacts.
The passageways were transformed into interactive spaces featuring the specificities of the periods they represent. For instance, one passageway was dedicated to Nikola Tesla, showcasing his discoveries. Another passageway became a war bunker, while the third resembled a 1960s tavern where visitors could dance to the music of that era. To experience the entire exhibition, visitors had to walk through a dimly lit, rainy section of the tunnel in the central part, symbolising a kind of cleansing and personal reflection after a turbulent period of war.
Finally, upon exiting the tunnel and moving into the future, each visitor had the opportunity to contribute by sending their own digital text message, which would also become a part of this interactive exhibition.
