When we stepped into the former Lower Town apartment, now converted into an office space dominated by a standard grid of suspended ceilings, we embraced the challenge of transforming this uninspired environment into a modern office for the IMC marketing agency. Our vision was to restore the original character of the residential apartment, making minimal changes to the space while incorporating sustainable design principles throughout.
The apartment's key feature, the enfilade, has been preserved and adapted to its new function, while the restored original parquet flooring further enhances the authenticity and warmth of the interior. To modernize the space, we introduced bold contrasts between traditional elements, contemporary interventions, and the existing features. In this spirit, the standard suspended ceiling was retained, adding a touch of office atmosphere in contrast to the softer residential feel.
As a counterpoint to the Lower Town apartment’s classic elements, such as walls with decorative borders, graphic wallpaper, and artwork, we exposed brick walls in key areas, adorned with street-style graffiti reminiscent of what (unfortunately) can be found on many of Zagreb’s building facades. This intervention introduces the pulse of the street, creating a unique dialogue between the apartment’s residential past and Zagreb’s urban present. The graffiti on the walls was created collaboratively by a professional street artist, employees, architects from Brigade, and clients during their visits to the agency.
As part of the project, we also designed a special relaxation room for employees, distinctly different from the rest of the space. This playful and unconventional room offers staff a place to unwind, infusing the work environment with creative energy. Special attention was given to integrating IMC’s brand identity into the space. The agency’s signature bold fuchsia color is subtly woven throughout the interior at strategic points, giving the office a distinctive visual identity and making it instantly recognizable.
